Film tie-ins, love them or loathe them you can't deny they keep on coming out and this time we have The Incredible Hulk. The first time we have seen this Marvel Comic hero on the next-gen consoles, and I guess we had better try to be nice, since we don't want to make him angry.

Well, I'm afraid that, he's not going to be overly impressed with me; because whilst there is fun to be had charging around this version of New York and climbing such iconic landmarks as the Chrysler and the Empire State Buildings, there's just not enough going for the game to make it worthwhile.

You start the game as Bruce Banner is cornered in Rio and about to be captured by the Army; enter the Hulk and let carnage ensue. The story then moves to Now York City and there as the lovable green monster (who no matter how much he grows, never loses his jeans) you get to rampage around trying to do good and battling the Enclave.

The missions unfold in a fairly free form manner, with sometimes several different lines available at any one time. The missions however are not all that different, usually entailing either destroying a building or more often then not protecting some puny male scientist types from foot soldiers and the like.

The use of the super strength of our favourite not-so-jolly green monster is the basis for the fights you can get into, this time however a good point is in the ability to use nearly anything as a weapon. Throw something into a building and bits of concrete litter the ground, simply pick up one of them and you can use that to whack things with. A nice touch, however even this has its problems; since some objects can't be used that would surely be an easy feat for the Hulk.

Now there are distractions from the missions in the shape of hidden items dotted about the scenery and of course the destruction of New York and inhabitants (if you are so inclined). Cause too much trouble though and the Army are sent out after you, starting with troops, then gradually moving onto heavier weapons, tanks and a special Anti-Hulk biomechanical system. Also every so often you will get Enclave units out on the rampage that you can charge into to help.

The hidden items around and about help increase the Hulks health and enable the Hulk to make special attacks. Later in the game some of the enemy 'Boss' characters require nothing but these attacks in order to defeat them, which does bring a sense of boredom into the game.

Graphically the game has some good points, the destruction that you can do to buildings and to cars etc. in NY is very well done, however there are downsides too. The draw distances and the cut scenes leave a lot to be desired. While the sound effects and voice acting; even though the actors involved in the latest Hulk movie lend themselves to the game they just don't sound like they are interested in what they were doing.

Other problems in the game include the collision detection, while the developers probably intended it to create some sense of power of the Hulk; the fact that objects to the side of you while moving get destroyed even when you haven't touched it just makes the game look poorly constructed.

Overall there is something to be said for a game where more fun is to be had outside the mission storyline then in it, like some of the GTA series. But this title just can't seem to get everything in the right perspective, whilst some enjoyment can be had, there just isn't enough care taken elsewhere. The type of game they have produced isn't really aimed at the age group it's been set at, I would say the BBFC 12 rating is the ragged edge of the target audiences age group . If you are a huge Hulk fan however, you may just like it, but I'm afraid a rental is the best bet for this title.
