Hollywood has a habit of rewriting history. Pearl Harbour is a great example. In case you didn’t know, it was actually America that won WWII single handed! Well now it appears the games developers are wanting a piece of that action and in Turning Point Fall of Liberty, it’s exactly what they’ve done.

Winston Churchill was hit by a taxi in the earlier part of his life. Now instead of him surviving and eventually leading the UK, in Turning Point he has died. Now the British have rolled over, the Nazis are running the country and are now on their way to America.

You start the game when the first invasion of America is taking place. It’s a fairly easy level, with the game slowly bringing you into the action. You of course learn all of the controls and about other things such as grappling.

Basically if you’re close enough to an enemy a picture of a fist will appear and you grapple with the enemy. Depending on the situation you are on you will more than likely have the option to perform an instant kill or use them as a shield. In some instances you have the option to perform an environmental kill. So this could be throwing them over the edge of a building, smashing their head through a TV or, a particular favourite of mine, shoving their head down a toilet and drowning them.

The one thing I will say about this is it is very difficult to actually sneak up and perform these grapple attacks. You can get close but 9 times out of 10 they will notice you before you get to them. But you should be just about close enough to perform the action. If not, just shoot them!

It will take you a few levels to get used to the grapple attack. It actually took me most of the game, but my first instinct is to shoot them in the head, not sneak up to them and give them a hug.
It will also take you a few levels to get used to the speed of movement in the game, especially if you’re used to the likes of Rainbow Six or Call of Duty 4. The default sensitivity just seems really slow and then the high sensitivity (the next level up) seems really quick. It doesn’t feel like there is any middle ground. It’s either really slow, or really quick. However, once you get past the first couple of missions (and stay off Call of Duty) you should be fine.

And it should be fairly easy to stay off Call of Duty, or any other game for that matter. Simply put, the game is very short. This could easily be done over a weekend of playing. There is an online mode to keep you occupied for a bit longer, but if you like FPS war games you’re more than likely to play COD4, Rainbow Six or GRAW2 online than this. Then there are the achievements to go for, but I can’t see this being a game you would really play a second time through.

The story behind the game is good. It’s been well written and is enough to keep you interested in what’s going on. What might frustrate you is the physical side of the game. This is one of the most frustrating games currently on the market.

Everything seems to have a small invisible shield surrounding them. The objects you are taking cover behind. Still taking cover but actually managing to get a shot in, you’ll somehow be hitting the object – or it at least appears you are according to the sparks and debris flying about. But if this was the real world, you’d be shooting with at least a couple of inches between you, the cover and the gap you are shooting down.

There is also the strange way the game physics react. Sometimes a grenade can do some serious damage to the people inside a room, other times you’ll find every single enemy is still alive and shooting.

You’ll also find that it glitches a lot. I have never played a game where people are shooting through walls, guns sticking out of walls, people falling through walls and other objects more times than I have in Turning Point. It’s ridiculous. It’s like the programming wasn’t done for objects like tables, walls and other large items in the game. I’ve had bullets flying through steel on a bridge and hitting me, but yet I can shoot at a table where an enemy is taking cover and it won’t make a scratch on them.

I also saw one of the most amazing magic tricks while playing. While looking down a sniper scope ready to take a shot, I saw my enemy shooting with bullets flying towards me. Nothing wrong with that I hear you cry. But take into account that he wasn’t actually looking at me, he was looking 90 degrees the other way and the bullets were actually coming out of the gun towards the player. It shows just how shoddy some aspects of the game actually are.

Now here’s the most annoying aspect of the game and too be honest the only reason why I ever stopped playing it while doing this review. The gap between checkpoints is immense. If you die you can find the 10, 15 even 20 minutes of play time you’ve just done was for nothing. There isn’t anything more annoying than going back 20 minutes and having to do it all again I think you’ll agree.

I did enjoy playing this game, don’t get me wrong. But the negative points of it have made this an easy review for me. This is a game for rent without a shadow of a doubt. The shortness and the general issues with it mean I can’t really recommend anything else. You’ll finish it within a weekend I can guarantee that, and I don’t think there is any replay value in it, not even in the online play with the strength of the competition out there. Rent this game and do play it. It is a very good game with a very good story. You’ll just finish it really quickly.
