  • The PS3 has had a difficult journey in Europe with some obvious hold ups on the way. For any PS3 owner yet to sample the delights of this Elder Scrolls saga, Oblivion is a perfect place to start; especially now you are lucky enough to be sampling these delights on a next generation system.

Oblivion’s success is not just down to its beautiful lush visuals, the breathtaking textures and sense of realism that is unparalleled in gaming history. Neither is it down to the highly enjoyable voice acting which adorns every single conversation, the sense of achievement you get when you uncover more of the fantastically interwoven plot, or the individual and personal rewards that await you from joining one of the multiple races and clans available. No, it’s simply because the more effort you place into the game, the more the game, in turn, will reward you. Oblivion actually shapes itself around your own playing style.

Oblivions well written and stylish story begins with your character locked up in the cold and damp Imperial city dungeons. After being left to your own devices your cell door swings open, guards push you back and in swans none other than the Emperor itself, It seems your cell contains a hidden emergency exit and passage is required forthwith. Lucky for you this also means an early release and a chance to get acquainted with the control scheme and actions that you’ll need to perform if you’re ever to save your sacred city from Oblivion. It’s here that you’ll also be able to customise every aspect of your character and it’s wise to pay particular attention to each nook and cranny these options offer up. Why? Well you’ll be spending some considerable time with you offline persona as Oblivion offers up several hundred gaming hours of pleasure – especially so if you take it slow and soak up the storyline.

Oblivion is an RPG and I know that genre scares the hell out of the mainstream gamer. Have no fear though; Oblivion will appeal to just about everyone with just a passive interest in gaming and once you set foot in Morrowind it’ll take a strong person to leave without closing at least a few of those pesky Oblivion gates. Game of the year for the PS3? Oh yes!
