  • There have been more then a few Real Time Strategy titles recently and the WWII based theme hasn’t been far from the front of these, so do we need another one? Because that is what Company of Heroes from Relic and THQ is, running through the timeline of D-Day, 6th June 1944, until a few months later.

There is however something new in this RTS, well, several things; the battlefield is almost completely destructible, you can give cover to your troops in houses and behind burnt out vehicles (even ones destroyed during the game) or walls and hedges. Use tanks to crash through walls, the aforementioned hedges, topple trees and even take chunks out of houses. The other thing is that, as a complete package this is one of the best in the genre for atmosphere and playability

The game starts out with you taking control of troops on Omaha beach, attempting to get enough of Able Company ashore to start attacking the defences. It will take you throughout the push to control Normandy; fighting through the hedgerows of the Cotentin Peninsular, the towns and cities like Cherbourg to attacks against V2 rocket sites. There are 15 missions, some of which are fairly long, but you will probably find it disappointing when you get to the end, it’s that good a game.

Switching between the capture of resource points and base building of the Army’s Able Company and the 101st’s Airborne reinforcement drops makes for changes in tactics. Mission structure can be fairly free flowing although you do find certain things have to be completed in order before moving on, which does restrict what you would like to do, like maybe capture surrounding areas before completing the primary mission. All missions will, of course, have the primary missions but CoH also adds secondary targets and a target that is required to gain various medals through the game. Some of these are relatively easy, others will need work, which will add some re-playability

Like in many RTS’ your units gain experience throughout the missions, some units can also be taken into subsequent missions and since experience matters you will find gung-ho tactics not the best case for CoH. Your units can be fitted out depending on your choices, for example your basic infantry unit can be upgraded with the BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) or Recoiless Rifles, for use against armoured vehicles. Weapons can also be acquired from the enemy, crew weapons like MG-42’s or Mortars.

Your fighting units cover a wide assortment, most will be Riflemen, but Machine-gun and Mortar teams also are required. But the most important units are probably Engineers, not only do they build your bases but they repair vehicles, build self contained machine gun nests and construct defences (tank traps, barbed wire, sandbags and minefields)

The whole package of CoH is what makes this title, graphics, sounds and the small unit tactics. Get your engineer units building sandbag emplacements to help shield your machinegun teams or use barbed wire to channel the enemy into kill zones (no fox holes or trenches though). If the dreaded panzer is expected then tank traps are required since vehicles are more then a match for barbed wire and sandbags.

Graphically Company of Heroes is stunning, the level of destruction for buildings between complete and destroyed and the fact that troops within the buildings are shown opening windows (if there are any) to shoot through or crouching at the corner on the second story with no walls and half a floor remaining just goes to add to the realism of battle. The graphics really show though when you call in artillery barrages or aircraft bombing runs, the frenzied and violent nature of war shines through while rag doll physics throw men and material about the screen with gay abandon. Cut scenes add more atmosphere to the game, showing the lead in to the missions and perhaps a good idea of the aftermath of battles

"Company of Heroes blitzkriegs its way through to the fore."

Sound effects in RTS’ have been a mixed bag in the past but again Company of Heroes blitzkriegs its way through to the fore here as well. Troops will notify you of contact with the enemy or completion of tasks with often humorous comments. For example set a unit to building sandbag defenses and you can expect a “If I see one more f***ing bag of sand” when it is all complete or sometimes it’ll be when you give the order out, but they don’t get that repetitive and every so often something new will give cause for a smile. Another huge plus is the off screen effects you get, give the order for an artillery barrage and you will hear the distant crumps of the guns firing, these are amongst the most realistic sounds ever.

For all the great features and gameplay there are some places that CoH stumbles, unit path finding leaves a lot to be desired. Move more then one vehicle at a time and you will find them bumping and getting in each others way and since a lot is given to the armour ratings on each side of these vehicles you often find one or more turned around and advancing with the highly vulnerable rear armour towards the enemy (highly annoying when facing the Tiger in later missions since large numbers of Sherman’s were required to take one out)

So, do we need another WWII based strategy title? When it’s of the standard of Company of Heroes then yes, we most certainly do. The fact that there are only missions in a small area of France must surely speak of the ubiquitous expansion packs covering the other major battles (Arnhem, El-Alamein, Iwo Jima, etc.). At least, I would hope there will be, since this game engine must be used again. The learning curve in this title may put some people off, certainly later in the missions, but there is enough to make the game enjoyable to green strategists while the veterans will find these same late missions give them something to think about. This game does contain some strong language, but then the subject matter isn’t exactly meant for the faint of heart, but, you’ve been warned.
