  • When Stubbs the zombie fell through my letter box, I was immediately intrigued. In the top left hand corner of the box says the immortal words "built with the Halo engine". For years, it was the unreal engine that set the standard, and was widely used by a lot of games. Now, it’s the Halo engine that is trying to set the bench mark. We all know that Halo was, and for many still is the greatest game on the Xbox. But by using the Halo engine, can you make a great game? Unfortunately in this case, the answer appears to be no.

You are playing as Stubbs, a zombie who has awoken from the dead in a futuristic city set in the 50s period. And what do all zombies want to do? Eat brains of course. You’re not just thrown straight into the game. The usual in-game tutorial will teach you how to eat human brains, and you continue to learn new skills throughout the game. These range from the basic controls of walking, moving the camera and the basic attack moves, and further on in the game you will learn the more advanced moves such as how to rip off a piece of your body as use it as a weapon. The explosive bowling ball head is a particular favourite of mine.

There are many things that you can do with Stubbs body, and you need to eat human brains to be able to get enough energy to perform the action. One other thing that you can do once you have enough energy is use your arm to take control of a human. Throw your arm into a situation you think is a bit risky, and move it to your next victim. If you manage to get to it without being destroyed, you can take full control of the human and make them your slave. Use whatever weapon they have to its full advantage, and kill as many of the humans as you can before your slave is finally stopped. Once that happens, your back in control of Stubbs, and can finish off the job that your body part started.

There are other ways of killing humans as well as using your body parts as bombs or mind control tools. You can beat them down and kill them, beat them down and eat their brains, or, if you re feeling sneaky, come up behind them and suck their brains out. To get the energy you need to perform special actions, you'll need to suck human brains. This isn’t always possible however and you will need to beat them to death. However you do kill them, they will become a zombie as well. The more zombies you can create, the bigger your living dead army. And the easier things will be for you.

The purpose of the zombie army is to take a little heat off you. They will follow you, and any humans they see, they will automatically go for. This means it’s not just you being shot at, and it also means any humans they kill will also become a zombie, and will make your army bigger. While the other zombies are off killing, you can either join them in the killing, or stand back and watch. Depends on what your style is!

As well as walking, (very slowly!) you have to use of some vehicles along the way. These vary from public vehicles, to the army vehicles that are trying to stop your living dead rampage. These are easy to use, some have weapons attached, and with most of the vehicles, you can let some of your fellow zombies jump in, and if you’re feeling generous, take them on a ride instead of walking to your destination.

"A lot of wandering around, hoping and second guessing is required."

The problem with this game is it’s extremely repetitive. This is all you do in the game. Wander around, killing humans. Yes there are different methods. But there is not enough variety in the game. There are little side games in the game, such as a dance off with the police commissioner. However, these are few and far between, and by the time you get to one, you are probably close to boredom as it is. There doesn’t appear to be any storyline or plots, and you sometimes even don’t know what you’re doing. Another extremely annoying part of the game is you can get lost very easily. You can get to the end of a map, and have no idea what to do next. There is the occasional green arrow pointing you to something you have to do. You complete that task and then wait for some kind of message to tell you what to do next. But it doesn’t come, and you have to guess what exactly is required of you. Unlike in Halo, there is no objectives menu telling you what to do. This can be extremely annoying and frustrating. A lot of wandering around, hoping and second guessing is required.

For further frustrations, the game seems very difficult at certain times, and easy at others. Even on the easy level, you will struggle at times. Sometimes the hordes of people you’re trying to kill you are just too much, or, without realising it, you have used your specials too early meaning that you have no defence against the humans. A lot of restarting levels will happen, making the game even more annoying.

The game has a multiplayer side to it, which could have been a possible saving grace. But unfortunately, this too is a disappointment. The multiplayer part of the game is simply a co-op version of the one player game, and from being an extremely difficult one player game at times, it becomes a very easy game in multiplayer. Two human players with a large zombie army, means even on the hardest level, you may not even break a sweat. The main disappointment about the two player game is it appears to have just been thrown in with no thought that this could be a great multiplayer game. Surely it would not have been difficult for something different such as a competition to see who can kill more humans in a set time. Just a little more thought, and this game could possibly be a good one.

Stubbs the zombie reminds me a lot of the game “State of emergency”. When you first start to play the game, it’s a novelty and a bit of a laugh. The remarks made by your victims when you suck their brains, the ways you can kill the humans, and the general blood and gore will keep you amused for a bit. However, it’s repetitive and lacks any kind of real long lasting game play. This is more of a game to play to pass a bit of time. The game had great potential. It used the Halo game engine well, but the lack of game play, repetitive nature, and any other form of multiplayer games not being put into the game, means it unfortunately does not come close to fulfilling it. This is probably one for rent, or wait until it’s in the bargain bins unfortunately.
