  • It has to be said that game developers have finally started to listen to the gaming public. After countless years of shoddy games based on high budget movie tie-ins things are definitely starting to happen in the gaming world. Activision picked up the gauntlet last year with the impressive Spiderman 2, now it seems Sierra have challenged that position further with The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, which finally goes on sale in stores tomorrow.

The Hulk deserves a decent game to his name and with Ultimate Destruction that’s exactly what he’s been rewarded with. The story is enjoyable, the graphics are respectable and everything moves at a frantic, yet pleasing pace. Missions are awarded one at a time and must be completed to proceed, but how you complete these missions is entirely up to you. You’ll find yourself on the hunt for secret documents, even rerouting electricity supplies to feed your research, as you chase the clock for that all important cure.

If the brain fails, brawn is only around the corner. Just about everything in the game world can be destroyed; even vehicles can be fashioned into new weapons for that extra destructive power. Smaller buildings can be leapt on with ease and missions can be undertaken whenever you choose in this welcome freeform universe. When things get a little hectic, even for the Hulk, you can simply climb the tallest buildings for a little bit of breathing space, it’s all breathtaking to watch, in a similar vein to the superlative Spiderman 2.

Complete enough missions and brand new fighting moves and bonus footage can be unlocked and purchased to take your game further, in fact some missions can only be started if your Hulk is strong enough. To keep things fresh, side quests can also be activated when funds are low and feature everything from racing sections to strength tests.

The PS2 graphics are comparable to the Xbox version with only the draw distance being slightly more favorable on the Xbox. The graphics may not be revolutionary but they are far from dull and the framerate stays constant throughout. However, what truly sets this game apart is the feeling that you have something truly powerful at your command, exactly how a Hulk game should feel. The GameCube version is equally as good suffice to say that there is very little difference between the three.

The overall story stays faithful to the Marvel comic strip with David Banner on the chase for his elusive cure. Will Banner ever rid himself of the torturous Hulk? You’ll have to complete the 20+ missions yourself for the answer to that one. Either way; while perhaps not quite as good as the aforementioned Spiderman 2, The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction still has enough staying power to make all pretenders to the throne green with envy.
