  • The sheer number of film tie-ins is astronomical, and the one thing that most have in common is that they just never live up to either the film or the hype. Now that Spiderman 2 has come out with differing game types for various platforms it was with some trepidation that I plugged the N-gage version in… Which version would it be? The PC one, aimed at the lobotomised/children or the Xbox version that rocked (according to the ic-games review).

Before we reveal the answer, and to make you read the review, there’ll be some mention of the game details. For starters the gameplay style, while there are some 3d web slinging sections the most common action is the side-scrolling platforming that is found in the Game Boy Advance version. The 3d parts of this title are kind of bolted on as an afterthought, showing that the N-gage is capable of this style of graphic, but when all you have to do is get from point A to point B in less then X number of seconds. This simply acts as a transition from one 2d section to the next.

The 2d side-scrolling is where the majority of your time will be spent, guiding spidey around the buildings fighting various baddies and avoiding whatever the traps are. The first being a building being filled with poisonous gas being release throughout it, you have to make it through the floors, with baddies as well.

The gameplay is pretty simple although not always as easy as it seems it should be to complete. Not, perhaps, a game for anyone over the age of 16, it should keep kids happy on a long journey, although the sound would have to be turned off or headphones worn.

Controls are simple; movement is obviously by the direction buttons. While ‘5’ is jump and again in the air throws a web (movement). ‘1’ throws a web to tie up and pull the baddy towards you. ‘7’ is for throwing punches. Nothing is too complicated for the mobile phone type keys available to the N-gage user.

Graphics aren’t anything special, cut scenes are photographic in nature and the people in them do look like the film characters, well, kind of. In game graphics are simple and perhaps are on par with the Game Boy Advance, colour, but blocky.

Sounds are very simple , a kind of whoosh sound when the web is thrown and a generic cry out when the baddies are hit, while the music does sound suitable for an 'action' title. Although it's all nothing, certainly, to write home about anyway.

Overall it must be said that this particular version falls in to the former category, suitable only for the kids on long journeys or perhaps rabid Spiderman fans. Just make sure there are headphones though or there will still be trouble on that journey, as the music and sounds will soon annoy. It must join the ranks of disappointing film tie-ins, but when you try to cash in on the hand-held market graphics and sound aren’t going to win prizes.
